Every student at Cove School is individually screened for Assistive Technology(AT)* to determine what tools and strategies best suit his or her skills and needs.  Students are provided with instruction, both 1:1 and in small groups, until they are proficient using the recommended tools.  At that time AT is integrated into their in-class work.  Individual writing and reading support may also be offered on a weekly basis.  In addition, whole class activities using AT are provided as needed.  Parent education is available.  Cove students are supplied with personal 1:1 Chromebooks;  all recommended AT tools are included on a student’s device.  Students are encouraged to advocate for themselves – to assure that they have access to the AT that they require to succeed, whether in an academic or vocational setting.  Knowledge and use of assistive technology will enable our students to become active, engaged learners.

*The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is the federal law whose purpose is to ensure that a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) is available to all students with disabilities.  A portion of this law is dedicated to the definition of assistive technology devices and services.  For children with disabilities the local public school system is required by law to develop an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) to address each child’s specific needs; consideration of assistive technology is a crucial part of this process.
