Once a Cougar, Always a Cougar
An Update from Luisa Rapisarda, Transition Specialist
During the 2019-2020 school year, we welcomed five former Cougars for an alumni panel to share their post-secondary experiences with our current high school students. Each participant traveled down different post-secondary paths and they collectively provided an in-depth description of the process they followed to arrive at their present ‘stop.’ The alumni are currently working and/or attending home district transition programs, community colleges, and private independent life skills programs.
The panel answered questions about classes they have taken, how they manage their time, independent skills they have mastered and participation in recreation and leisure activities. They also shared how Cove School helped to prepare them for the future. Perhaps, and most importantly, the former students offered words of advice to our high school students.
Later in the evening, Cove staff gathered at the Skokie LifeTime Fitness Center with 52 alumni from graduating years 2008-2019. It was amazing to see the large group of former students interacting across graduating years; exchanging contact information, taking pictures, meeting new friends and practicing their social skills. A big hit of the night included a video montage with pictures of all the alumni across the years along with, sadly, an “in memoriam” section. The fitness staff was awesome and helped to serve pizza, pasta, salad, and dessert in addition to supervising a variety of team games including obstacle courses, dodgeball and basketball. It was so much fun that at the end of the evening, we had to ask our participants to leave! Everyone is already looking forward to our next gathering!
