STEAM

At The Cove School, a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) approach to learning strives to achieve the following learning objectives and goals: Collaborative learning, exposure and interest to new types of careers, critical thinking and problem solving, habits of mind, and communication skills. The approach focuses on learning skills necessary for success: life and career skills, learning and innovation (critical thinking, communication, collaboration, creativity), information and media technology, core subjects and 21st century themes.

Cove offers several classes providing opportunities to develop skills through hands-on activities and projects. Students addressed solving real world problems from design to conception using technology to create 3-D printed designs, program robots, and simple circuits and machines. 

STEAM programming is offered in our Extended School Year program and in each of the grade levels, and the learning concepts will continue to be integrated into all areas of the curriculum. Classes are designed to be co-taught with a classroom teacher and technology facilitator, and projects are collaborative, with the work occurring in partners or within small groups, consistent with The Cove School model.

In the elementary classes, the focus is on introducing students to basic engineering and design principles, through specific STEAM programming in science and social studies classes. The junior high curriculum will include completion of a multi-week problem-based learning project, culminating in competition like simulation. High school students will focus on critical thinking skills, asking such questions as “What is the design process?” and “How can it help us solve problems?”

In the coming academic year we plan to offer new elective courses in the high school. The electives are the joint effort of the STEAM team and our transition team to promote college and career readiness in our elective offerings. The intention is to expose students to new careers, develop hard skills relevant to those careers, but, most importantly, to develop the habits of mind necessary for post-secondary success such as persistence, flexible thinking, interdependence, etc. The electives will include Principles of Engineering, Computer Programming, Entrepreneurship, Consumer Math, Sports and Entertainment Marketing, Integrated Arts, Clothing/Sewing, Nutrition and Culinary Arts, Digital Media Design & Production, Graphic Design, Theater Arts, and Clothing/Sewing.

After school classes and clubs including Robotics and Maker Club will continue to be offered for all students.
